Franz Joseph Degle (attrib.), St. John Nepomuk

1750s
Church of St. Peter, Munich, Germany

Wearing a biretta and holding a crucifix as usual, the saint's body lies on a scarlet sheet. According to the legend it floated down the river from the bridge where the saint had been thrown, washed ashore, and was put to rest in the cathedral of St. Vitus (Butler, II, 333).

The halo with five stars is St. John Nepomuk's attribute. It is not clear whether the putto is bringing him the laurel crown and palm branch or taking them away, now that John is dead, to where his soul has ascended.
